HIV cases rose 47% among men, and 105% among women.
- In 1999, approximately 56% of HIV
cases reported were among African Americans.
- In 1999, 78% of reported cases of HIV
among African Americans were male.
- Syphilis is a key indicator of
increased risk of HIV.
- Nashville has the second highest rate
of syphilis in the nation.

Our Goal...
Metro Can exists to help individuals:
- Increase knowledge, attitudes and
behaviors aimed at:
- reducing the
risk of HIV infection
- reducing the risk of STD infection
- reducing injection-related risks
- reducing sexual behavior risks
- Increase self-sufficiency through:
- improved employment stability
- improved housing stability
- improved mental health status
- decreased involvement with the criminal justice system
- Reduce their use of alcohol and drugs
- Obtain drug treatment

- Case management services
- Referrals for substances abuse
treatment
- HIV harm reduction interventions
- Spiritual nurture
- Need-based referrals to community-based organizations
